VPN Access

Clientbase (FortiClient)

The FortiClient is additional software that must be installed to establish a secure connection to the university. Once connected, you have access to the university network and can conduct web research or other university applications from your own computer, laptop or mobile device.

Why should you use the VPN access of the FWW?
  • To web research (http,https)
  • Access to projectmachines (http, https, ssh, nx …)
  • Access to the terminalserver
    • rothko.wi.hs-wismar.de (Linux/NX)
    • rivera.wi.hs-wismar.de (Linux/NX)

Installation

Installation for Windows

1. download FortiClientVPN

   Download FortiClientVPN for Windows

 2. install FortiClient

Run the downloaded installation file as an administrator user (right mouse click "Run as administrator"). The installation process starts and all settings can be retained.

3. start FortiClient

Start the FortiClient program using the shortcut on the desktop or in the start menu.

4 Configuring the VPN connection

    Choose Configure VPN
    Make sure SSL VPN is selected
    Connection name and description can be freely selected
    For Remote Gateway, enter the following URL:
    vpn-gate.wi.hs-wismar.de
    The port to use is 443
    Under "Save Login" you can enter your ITSMZ login name
    End the configuration with Apply and Close

5. Establish VPN connection

    Enter your valid ITSMZ login data under user name and password

Click on Disconnect "VPN-FWW" to disconnect manually.

7. reconnect

If you want to reconnect, restart FortiClient. If FortiClient is already running, use Connect to "VPN-FWW" in the FortiClient context menu in the system tray area (right click on the FortiClient icon in the system tray area).

Installation for Linux

For the VPN connection under Linux please install and configure the openfortivpn client. It is installed as follows via the CLI:

# sudo apt install openfortivpn

Edit the config file as follows:

# sudo vi /etc/openfortivpn/config

      #config file for openfortivpn, see man openfortivpn(1)
      host = vpn-gate.wi.hs-wismar.de
      port = 443
      username = (Loginname ITSMZ)
      password = (optional)

The client is started via the CLI with sudo openfortivpn.

This setup has been tested for current Debian and Ubuntu versions.

Problems, Troubleshooting

Error during logon

You receive the error message:

  • Error: Permission denied.
  • In most cases this is a typo, if this can be excluded, please reset your password on the UMS page.
  • DO NOT use the e-mail address as RZ login name!
FortiClient Mac OS

The downloaded FortiClient from the WebVPN portal cannot be installed.

  • The downloaded FortiClient is intended for the current Mac OS version, older Mac OS versions require an older FortiClient
  • Determine your Mac OS version
  • Download the valid FortiClient - see table above
