Client-based (OpenVPN Connect)
OpenVPN Connect is additional software that must be installed to establish a secure connection to the university. Once the connection is established, you will have access to the university network and can therefore conduct web searches or use other university applications from your own computer, laptop, or mobile device.

Installation
Note: To download the configuration profile, please log in first using your ITSMZ credentials via the lock icon in the upper-right corner.
First, download the VPN client for your operating system from the following page:
Next, install the client. You can also find installation instructions for the supported operating systems on the download page.
After installation, a configuration profile must be imported into the VPN client. The profile contains the necessary settings for accessing the VPN gateway.

You can download the required configuration profile here. Please log in first using your ITSMZ credentials via the lock icon in the upper-right corner of the webpage.
After importing the profile, there are still a few settings to check. Some adjustments are required; other settings are optional.
No additional external user certificate is required to log in to the VPN gateway. Therefore, the corresponding option in the imported profile must be disabled.
To do this, follow these steps:
- In the VPN client, open the hamburger menu (☰) in the upper-left corner.
- Select “My Profiles”
- Locate the VPN profile you imported earlier.
- Tap the pencil icon to edit the profile.
- Disable the “Require External Certificate” option.
- Then save the change.
This setting is necessary to ensure that you can log in using only your ITSMZ credentials.
For better organization, you can change the name of the VPN profile. This is especially helpful if you have set up multiple VPN connections on your device.
For example, you can use a unique name such as “VPN HS-Wismar” or a similar label.
Changing the profile name does not affect the functionality of the VPN connection.
Depending on your operating system and personal workflow, you can also specify how the VPN client should behave when the computer starts up or when establishing a connection.
Possible settings include, for example:
- automatically starting the VPN client when logging into the operating system,
- automatically establishing a VPN connection,
- automatically reestablishing the connection after an interruption,
- minimizing the VPN client after a successful connection is established.
These settings are optional. To use the VPN, it is sufficient to manually start the client as needed and select the desired VPN connection.
Especially on personal devices, it is recommended to establish a VPN connection only when you actually need to access internal services.
Once the profile has been imported and the necessary settings have been configured, you can establish the VPN connection. To do so, select the appropriate profile in the VPN client and start the connection.
Then log in to the VPN gateway using your ITSMZ credentials (the same credentials you use for Stud.IP, myWings, or myoffice).

Once you have successfully logged in, the VPN connection should be established.
As long as the VPN connection is active, you can access the internal services that have been made available to you.
Problems, Troubleshooting
If you are unable to establish a connection, first check whether
- the correct configuration profile has been imported,
- the “Require External Certificate” option is disabled, and
- you have entered your ITSMZ login credentials correctly.
