Download Thunderbird and install the standard version 

How do I set up my email account in Thunderbird?
  1. There are several ways to create an account:
  2. after the 1st start see pictures on the right or
  3. Open up the following functions in the menu: File -> New -> Existing e-mail account

 Fill in the 3 areas, check the box for Save Password
--> Next

In the new window, click on Edit manually and change the fields as follows:

Inbox server:; 143 | STARTTLS | Password, normal
Outgoing mail server:; 587 | STARTTLS | Password, normal
Username: your full email address

How can I manage my myOffice calendar via Thunderbird?

  1. Create Calendar
  2. By double-clicking on the area (green see picture above) you can create a new calendar.
  3. In Network, select --> Next
  4. Select CalDAV and copy the address line from the clipboard to the Address field, check the box for offline support. --> Next

On the left side you will now see your calendar, which now synchronizes with Thunderbird.

How can I encrypt and sign my e-mails?

Apply for a personal email certificate from Wismar University, import it into your browser and export it as described.

Import the certificate into Thunderbird:

Tools -> Settings -> Advanced -> Certificates -> Manage Certificates -> Import
Change the settings in Tools -> Account Settings -> S/MIME Security
Select your personal certificate for digital signature and encryption, set the settings as shown in the picture.

Encrypt individual e-mails

ATTENTION: You can only encrypt emails to recipients from whom you have a public key (your email program usually remembers the key automatically the first time you receive a signed email from the recipient).

Write an e-mail and encrypt it by selecting Encrypt message in the menu under S/MIME --> Encrypt message

How do i set up my Outlook email account?
  1. Click on "File" in the menu bar, "Information" in the submenu and then on the "Account Settings" button.
  2. In the appearing window click on "New...".

In the window "Add account" select the option "manual configuration or additional server types" and click "Next".

In the following window please select "POP3 or IMAP" and then click "Next".

  1. Your name: Your first and last name
  2. E-mail address: Your complete e-mail address
  3. Account type: IMAP
  4. Incoming mail server:
  5. Outgoing mail server:
  6. Username: your full email address
  7. Password: Your password

    Then click on the "Further settings" button. 

    Select the "Outgoing mail server" tab and tick the "Outgoing mail server (SMTP) requires authentication" checkbox.

    1. Click on the "Advanced" tab and select "TLS" from the "Use the following encrypted connection type:".
    2. Make sure that the input field for "Incoming mail server (IMAP):" contains the default port "143" and for "Outgoing mail server (SMTP):" the default port "25".

    Click on "OK", then on "Next" and on "Finish". This completes the client configuration.

    Calendar synchronization via CalDAV Synchronizer

    CalDav Synchronizer is an Outlook plug-in and can be used to synchronize the GroupOffice calendar, tasks and address book with Outlook. The software is available as AGPL license and can be used freely on business and private devices. Supported Outlook versions are: 2016, 2013, 2010 and 2007.

    Download the software: Outlook CalDAV Synchronizer from:

      1. Installation with the default values
      2. Plugin is activated by restarting Outlook

      2. Click on "General Options" below this tab
      3. In this window deactivate the point: "Automatically check for newer versions
      4. close window
      How can I encrypt and sign my e-mails?

      3. (keep the entered password safe)
      4. In Outlook click on: --> File --> Options --> Trust Center and open the settings

      1. Switch to email security and click the Import/Export button 
      2. With "Browse" ...  in the upper selection, select the certificate that you have previously exported
      3. Enter the corresponding password

        1. Close the window and open the settings in the Encrypted E-Mail Messages area.
        2. In the Preferred security settings field, select your certificate and activate all fields

        1. Close all settings with OK and open a new e-mail
        2. Via Menu --> Options the e-mail can be signed and/or encrypted.

        Apple Mail is the standard application for macOS to connect and manage any number of POP and IMAP accounts. Advantages of this application are the comfortable operation with large data volumes, easy integration of existing, system-wide Internet accounts and secure, separate handling of mail data and mail identities. Calendar and contact data of can be imported via the integrated macOS applications "Calendar" and "Contacts".

        How do i set up my Apple mail?

        An initial setup of Apple Mail always starts with the wizard, which offers templates for various providers. Start with "Other mail account ...".
        Fill in the corresponding fields with your login data.

        After "Log in" the detailed setup with the corresponding information for incoming and outgoing mail servers takes place. The SSL protocol for secure file transfer is automatically activated.

        Apps other than "Notes" cannot be connected to Apple Mail.

        By default, the "Column layout" is activated.

        This can be changed under "Settings > Display > Use Classic Layout".
        How can I connect my (myoffice) contacts to Apple contacts?
        In Apple Contacts, after "Add account..." and "Other contacts account...", also select the option "Manual" and complete your details as shown.

        With a small delay, all contacts that have been added to the groupware ("Address Book") manually or via group vcf should appear in the contact list.


        Technically, there is no difference between the mail client for the iPhone and the iPad, but the interface has been adapted to the different screen sizes. Under iOS for iPhone and iPad, any number of e-mail accounts can be managed. The following is the setup for iOS 15 on an iPhone.

        How do i set up Mail in iOS
        • Since iOS 15, the email account setup is again under "Settings > Mail > Accounts" instead of "Settings > Accounts & Passwords".
        • We select "Other ..." to set up the university account.

        • In addition to the mail account, the CalDAV and CardDAV accounts mentioned above under macOS can also be inserted from here.

        • In the next step, the essential information about the account is requested.
        • Then all detailed information on the incoming and outgoing mail server is required. SSL is automatically activated.

        • Afterwards, the account will appear in the mail application, including the self-selected description.
        • Mail accounts can be temporarily switched on and off ("holiday mode") via "Accounts & Passwords".
