2016-2017 Memorial project of the Wüstenrot Stiftung

“To bring one of the landmarks of the port city Sassnitz on Rügen back to its former glory, the Kurmuschel is to be restored. Support for the municipality comes in form of the Wüstenrot Stiftung, which, according to its managing director, will pay for the restoration.

Time has taken its toll on the architectural ensemble, which was put under a preservation order in 2014. Paint is peeling off the shell construction, parts have broken off the adjacent pergola left and right. Building physicists, restorers and preservation experts sent by the Wüstenrot Stiftung in Ludwigsburg already took a closer look at the Kurmuschel and compiled their findings in a feasibility study. The construction work is planned for the autumn with an estimated cost of 300.000 euros.

Afterwards the municipality wants to take care of the renovation of the pergola and surrounding square. According to the head of building authorities Claudia Klemens the city has already budgeted the cost out of the city’s funding programme.

The Wüstenrot Stiftung issued its very own memorial project, focussing on post-war constructions. Projects like the restoration of the Kurmuschel in Sassnitz are paid by the equity business’ profit distribution. 66 percent of the Wüstenrot-Bausparkasse equities belong to the Wüstenrot Stiftung.”
