NB-LAB

Research in the Amazon

This ambitious initiative aims to enable students and scientists from all over the world to conduct research together in the Amazon. The research should benefit the indigenous population and the unique nature.

NB-LAB stands for "Nature-based living-lab for interdisciplinary practical and research semester on sustainable development and environmental protection in the Amazon Rainforest". Taking into account the needs of the indigenous population groups of the Amazon, interdisciplinary research topics are to be developed. To work on these topics, students can live and work together with researchers in one of the Living Labs for several months as part of their practical semester. The consortium consists of four universities from Peru and Ecuador, the first centre of excellence in Peru, a Spanish university and two German universities.

Two Living Labs are planned, one in Iquitos (Peru) and another in Tena (Ecuador). They are connected by the Amazon River. The interdisciplinary approach enables many disciplines to participate in the research projects in the NB-LABs. In addition to architects, civil engineers and mechanical engineers, students from the fields of product design, business administration or agricultural sciences can also participate. The topic determines the composition of the disciplines in a research team, which then works together over several weeks and months. The first two trial runs are planned for 2022/23 and will be financed from project funds.

With the NB-LABs, the project consortium wants to create new incentives for further international research in the Amazon for the benefit of the people living there and their unique nature.
