Dr. Arnd Florian Hennemeyer had already been appointed on a temporary basis in 2017 for the field of World Heritage Studies/World Monument Studies and has been working at our UAS ever since. With this permanent position, he can continue to contribute his expertise to teaching and research and continue his work on an ongoing basis. In 2019, for example, he and Prof. Jan Blieske invited experts in the fields of monument preservation, lighting design, architecture and architectural history from all over the world to the international conference ‘Light and Built Heritage’ in Wismar. The intensive support for the World Heritage application ‘Schwerin Residence Ensemble’ was undoubtedly a great success, as the ensemble was inscribed into the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2024. He was also a member of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Climate Protection Future Workshop set up by the state government.

Before starting in Wismar, Hennemeyer researched and taught at ETH Zurich. Born in Munich, he began his academic career at the Technical University of Munich, where he studied architecture and obtained his doctorate in 2006. He has been internationally active in the field of historical building research. In addition, he has extensive experience in planning and project management in the field of building renovation. At our university, he is currently researching a recently discovered ancient temple.

His design philosophy for historic buildings is based on the conviction that architectural interventions should never be carried out against, but always with and for the existing building. Documentation, analysis and interpretation of the existing building are at the core of research-based design. They encompass both theory and practice, ranging from the history of the building to structural details.
