After 20 years of teaching, Wismar University of Applied Sciences has appointed Dr. Antje Bernier as an honorary professor for "Barrier-free planning and building" in the Faculty of Architecture and Design.
She has been a regular lecturer in architecture since 2007, particularly in the field of barrier-free construction, but also urban and building refurbishment and integrative urban-rural development. She also teaches on various distance learning courses at our UAS. She focuses on practical training and makes project results available to the UAS. Previously, she was a research assistant in the field of building law/building operations as part of the HWP equal opportunities program “Franziska Tiburtius Program” of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern from 2004 to 2006.
Dr. Bernier received her doctorate in engineering from the University of Rostock (Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences) in 2011 with the distinction of magna cum laude. She completed her studies in civil engineering (Diploma TH, 1991) and architecture (Diploma FH, 1998) with the grade “very good”. Prior to this, she completed vocational training as a construction worker in Rostock.
Dr. Bernier is also committed to accessibility and inclusion on a voluntary basis. She has been a member of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Inclusion Promotion Council for ten years and was appointed to the Science and Practice Advisory Board of the Federal Association of Lebenshilfe this year. Prior to that, she was appointed as an expert for the Federal Accessibility Initiative from 2023 to 2025, for which the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (BMAS) is responsible and which she continues to support
The scientist regularly participates in organizing committees of scientific conferences and is intensively involved in specialist discussions throughout Germany.
Prof. Dr. Antje Bernier will give her inaugural lecture as part of the “DIAlog” lecture series on design-related topics, which can be attended free of charge by anyone interested.
