A five-member delegation from Shanghai Maritime University (SMU), led by Vice President Prof HE Li and the Pro-Dean of SMU's International Education College, WANG Yingming, as well as other professors, paid a brief visit to our university's Maritime, Engineering and Logistics department in Warnemünde last week as part of their tour of several maritime education and research institutions in Europe (including in Italy and Sweden).
The two institutions not only work together in the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU). They are also closely linked through the International Maritime Lecturers Association (IMLA). They have also been cooperating in the field of maritime education and research for almost 30 years, at that time with our predecessor institution ‘Warnemünde/Wustrow University of Maritime Engineering’.
One of the purposes of the delegation's long journey was to discuss ways of continuing and deepening the long-standing cooperation between the two renowned maritime universities, e.g. by enabling students and teaching staff to spend time abroad.
The Chinese university is the coordinator of the ‘Maritime Technology Cooperation Centers Asia’ (MTCC - Asia) project initiated by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and supported by the European Union. The aim of this project is to use technologies and measures in maritime education and training to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping. SMU and Wismar University of Applied Sciences have long been dedicated to this global task.
