Thedegree course in Commercial Law offered by the University of Wismar comprises abachelor’s programme and a Master’s programme, leading to the qualifications ofBachelor of Laws and Master of Laws. Part of the reason for this necessaryreform was to ensure the international equivalence of higher education degrees.
The programme begins with a six-semester Bachelor’s course covering theprinciples of commercial law and business administration. The aim of this is toprepare you in practical terms for the demands of a challenging career inbusiness law. You will complete an eight-week practical exercise within acompany during the semester holidays. Once you have successfully completed theBachelor’s course, you have the option of consolidating and developing thebasic skills thus far acquired by participating in the four-semester Master’scourse. The Master’s programme is strongly application-based and offers a widerange of elective course units. Students who usefully combine modules to form afocused field of study are granted the distinction of a specialisation. Around60% of course units relate to legal subjects, with approximately 30% linked to businessadministration courses and around 10% related to additional qualifications (forexample, business English, rhetoric, presentation, project planning, teamwork).Complex commercial law or interdisciplinary case studies are built in: Theserecreate genuine business situations from a practical angle, giving you thebest possible preparation for the responsible tasks you will perform in yourworking role.
The entire course of study, comprising the Bachelor of Laws and Master of Laws,therefore has a duration of ten semesters. Needless to say, you can choose toleave the University of Wismar after six semesters with the recognisedvocational qualification of Bachelor of Laws. With this degree qualification,you can embark directly on an occupation in the field of law or businessadministration; you can also opt to pursue an alternative advanced course ofstudy. The Master’s qualification provides you with greater attractiveness toemployers and, for example, an appropriate level of preparation for the vocationalexaminations to qualify as a tax consultant or chartered accountant. A furtherpossibility would be to rejoin the Master’s programme at the University havinggained some work experience.
In overall terms, we offer a degree programme in close cooperation withbusiness which orientates its legal training around the particular needs of thecommercial sector. The main legal areas covered include contract law, companylaw, tax law, banking law, insolvency law and industrial law. All of these havepractical relevance to business enterprises.

General Admission Requirements: Bachelor’s programme: General or subject-restricted higher education entrance qualification or Evidence of completion of a course of education recognised as equivalent by theMinister for Education, Science and Culture in the state of Mecklenburg-WestPomerania or Passing of an access examination following completion of vocational trainingand at least three years’ practical experience
Master’s programme: Completion of Bachelor’s degree or Graduate industrial lawyer (FH) or Completion of an equivalent course of study at a higher education institution(national/outside of Germany, overall grade up to and including 2.5). The Board of Examiners has the final decision on exceptions and the recognitionof comparable qualifications.

Areas of application: Your likely place of work will be in a commercial enterprise as aqualified lawyer with demonstrable competence in business administration. Youwill be qualified to perform a wide range of functions within the financialservices sector (in particular banks, savings banks and insurance companies) aswell as commercial, service, trade and industrial organisations.Accountancy/tax consultancy offices and business/management consultancy firmsrepresent another major source of employment.
